Sylhet flood 2022:

Under the post-flood rehabilitation programme of Education and Solidarity Organisation (ESO), on 15th and 16th July 2022, we covered two Upazilas in Sylhet- Companyganj and Jainta.

Along with us (ESO members), cooperation was received from local volunteer AhmaedKabirRasel, who himself raised a huge sum of funds as his own initiative. In the real sense, without his collaboration we could not have accomplished the task successfully and smoothly.

It flooded a total of four times this year in the devastated upazila of Jainta. During the March-April flood, the Boro rice got submerged and hence the farmers could not reap the crop that season; and it is to be mentioned that, the Jainta region is a single-cropped area. Hence, the flood of April led to a severe loss of productivity. In the following months, the flood of June has been the most aggressive one that Jainta, Goain, and Companyganj have seen in this century by far. Uncountable people and domestic cattle drowned or got washed away!

We went to Dorbosto Union of Jainta for rehabilitation assistance within our limited funds. As our local guide, we had Modachhir Ahmed,(member, JaintaUpazilaDorbosto Union Parishad), who got chosen as the member three times in a row. To pay homage, a crest has been awarded to him by the government for his contributions dedicated to the flooding occurrences. We heard some stories from him. During the last flood, water gushed in and within a few hours the water level rose upto roof level. The entire area broke into a tumult. Some escaped by cutting the tin roof of their houses, but alas, some could not do that even; families stuck inside got their houses filled up with water and gave out their last breaths together.
These incidents got reported in the news as well. But there is a huge difference between just hearing and observing closely.

In Kanjar, amongst the devastation, the villagers somehow made makeshift roofs for the ruined houses and remained in the vulnerable condition. Most people of this region earn their livelihood by farming. The houses are located on high hills and are far apart from each other; surrounding them are low rice lands. They suffered the most loss. We visited normal villages as well and the damage faced in those localities were comparatively much less. We were able to provide financial assistance for rehabilitation for 34 families. Most families were given 20 thousand taka each. A few families who suffered less damage were given 5 thousand or 10 thousand each. In Kanjar village, the flood caused destruction to a total of 108 houses. A humanitarian appeal to all, come let’s try to be by their side through these hard times!

We will forever be grateful to everyone who participated for this cause by providing finance, assistance, advice, guidance and emotional support.

Sources of fund: Instantly raising funds from friends and family as well as well wisher.
